(IDEX Online) - One of the world's rarest Rolex watches - so rare that many collectors didn't believe it actually existed - is to be sold by Sotheby's Geneva next month with an estimate of $800,000 to $1.6m. The Cosmograph Daytona, ref 16516, was made of platinum with a diamond-set mother-of-pearl dial in 1999 as a special commission - four Daytonas, each with a different dial - even though Rolex is famous for not producing privately commissioned limited editions.

Gemfields Blames Market Conditions for $100m Loss

It suspended mining at its Kagem emerald mine in Zambia for up to six months last December. It was also forced to temporarily close its Montepuez ruby mine, in Mozambique due to civil unrest.

Eleven women presenters are showcasing diamond jewelry in a collaboration with broadcasters JioHotstar and Star Sports. The Tata IPL (Indian Premier League) attracts record-breaking TV audiences with a series of evening games played between 10 city or state teams, that are shown live between March and May.
India's Polished Diamonds Export Down 17%

(IDEX Online) - India's polished exports fell by almost 17 per cent in the fiscal year ending March 2025, to $13.29bn, according to the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). That's among the lowest annual export figures for two decades, although not, as widely reported, the lowest of all. The GJEPC figure for 2005 was $12.3bn, up from $10.3bn in 2004. By comparison 2023/4 foreign sales totaled $15.97m.
Second Emerald Dealer Shot Dead by Sniper

(IDEX Online) - A Colombian emerald dealer has been shot dead at his home in the country's capital Bogota by a sniper. The death of Jesus Hernando Sanchez, aged 62, comes just eight months after his business partner Juan Sebastian Aguilar (also known as Pedro Pechuga), aged 58, was shot by a sniper in the same exclusive residential area. Both men had survived previous assassination attempts - in one case Sanchez lost an eye and a kidney, and spent two months in a coma.

(IDEX Online) - LVMH reported a slight dip in revenue from its watches and jewelry division during the first quarter of 2025, down 1 per cent to EUR 2.48bn ($2.82bn). That's in stark contrast to a 27 per cent year-on-year increase in Q4 of 2024. But it performed better than all other divisions and was the only one to show growth. Wines and spirits fell 8 per cent, fashion and leather goods were down 4 per cent.
Alrosa Mulling Underground Expansion at Jubilee

(IDEX Online) - Alrosa is expected to decide soon whether it will switch from open-pit to underground mining at the Jubilee pipe, part of its huge Aikhal mine, in Yakutia, north-eastern Russia. "We need to make an investment decision on Jubilee, on the transition to underground mining after the open pit is depleted," Pavel Marinychev, the company's CEO, said in an interview with the Yakutia 24 TV channel. Operations at the Jubilee kimberlite pipe (also known as Yubileinaya), began in 1990.
Petra Delays Sales of Cullinan Goods over Tarriff Uncertainty

(IDEX Online) - Petra has delayed the sale of around 200,000 carats from its Cullinan mine, in South Africa, until there is "greater clarity around the impact of the tariffs". The UK-based miner made the announcement on Wednesday 9 April, the day US President Donald Trump said he was pausing the imposition of reciprocal tariffs for 90 days. "The US tariffs announcement late last week has resulted in considerable diamond market uncertainty," the company said.
Moody's Downgrades Botswana Economy from Stable to Negative

(IDEX Online) - Botswana's economic outlook has been downgraded from stable to negative by Moody's, as a result of the prolonged downturn in the diamond industry. Last month S&P Global Ratings (S&P), another of the "Big Three" credit rating agencies, mad the same downgrade, forecasting a steep rise in government debt. Botswana, the world's biggest rough diamond producer since Russia was hit by G7 sanctions, relies on diamonds for 80 per cent of its export revenue and 30 per cent of its GDP.
