Independent Media Institute

The Independent Media Institute (IMI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educating the public through a wide range of independent media initiatives and programs. We collaborate with journalists and media platforms to highlight important stories that matter to the community, utilizing various media formats and distribution methods. For over thirty years, the Independent Media Institute has been committed to producing and sharing content focused on political and social issues. In 1998, IMI launched AlterNet, a renowned news website that featured original reporting from independent investigative journalists and shared a diverse selection of partner publications. For more than 20 years, AlterNet reached a broad audience, peaking at an impressive average of 6.5 million unique monthly visitors in 2016, while publishing around 1,000 articles each month. In early 2018, IMI transitioned AlterNet to new ownership, allowing the organization to concentrate on developing and disseminating original insights into social justice and public interest topics. A portion of our current work is still published on AlterNet in collaboration with the new owners. Through our own reporting and partnerships with various organizations, IMI remains devoted to excellence and making a positive social impact in the media landscape.
