The arrest of Istanbul’s mayor, Ekrem Imamoğlu, a direct rival of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, on March 19, sparked massive protests across Turkey. Authorities responded by making thousands of arrests, among them journalists who were covering the unrest. Less than a week later, Istanbul police raided the homes of several journalists, including AFP photographer Yasin Akgü. The targeted journalists were arrested and later released.

In July 2024, Everlyn Namai dreamed that her missing cousin, 26-year-old Josephine Owino, came to her for help. “I’m here in the cold, in the water. Why have you left me here? Come get me,” Namai recounted Owino saying in the dream. This and other dreams reportedly experienced by Owino’s family members led to the shocking discovery of 10 sacks filled with dismembered body parts of at least eight Kenyan women.

Last week, I traveled to the historic city of Perugia in Umbria, Italy. With clear blue skies, wisteria hanging over ancient Roman walls, plenty of gelato and beautiful vistas from the hilltop, the setting was pretty special. More inspiring though, were the people I spoke to during my visit. Perugia is the home of the annual international journalism festival, a meeting of media movers and shakers from all over the globe. These are my five biggest takeaways.

The protesters were fueled by anger over a speech made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Rahman’s daughter, six months after her removal from power last August.
