Once, when I was working as a writer at a local newspaper, a former colleague came by the office to say hello. I got so anxious at the thought of making small talk that I literally fled the building. A few years back, I lived alone in an apartment. I wanted to get to know my neighbors better, so I started saying hi whenever I saw them in the hallway. One guy down the hall took this as a green light to unload his life story on me every time we ran into each other.
