Rainbow crosswalks brighten up Jasper for Pride Month

JASPER – A small mountain town is honouring Pride Month, which takes place every June, with three crosswalks that were painted in mid-May. Around a dozen volunteers helped paint the Pride, Progressive and Transgender crosswalks, which are located at the intersection of Patricia Street and Pyramid Lake Road this year. “Everybody loves them, from what I hear,” said Mollie Lalonde Lynch, who co-chairs the Jasper Pride Festival Society along with Wendy Hall.

Wild Mountain Music Festival returning next month

HINTON – A rockin’ music festival will be showcasing Alberta artists just outside Jasper’s east gate from July 18 to 20. The headliners this year for the Wild Mountain Music Festival are Doc Walker, Jason McCoy, Michelle Wright and Bahamas. The festival will feature over a dozen other musicians, many of them new and upcoming. “We try to be pretty diverse and include everybody,” said Lisa Barrett, one of the festival’s organizers.
Jasper council hears identified town values, holding practice public hearing for land-use matter

JASPER – The municipality has identified "belonging, connection, nature, responsible, thriving and inclusive" as community values that will guide the creation of the town plan in 2026. On Tuesday (June 10), committee of the whole recommended that council receive the values as information and direct administration to incorporate them into Jasper’s town plan. “The words are from the community of Jasper,” said Beth Sanders, director of urban design and standards.

JASPER – Jacob Playfair came in first for this year's 165-kilometre Grand Fondo on Saturday (June 7) with a time of 4:44:51. Playfair also had the best time for the 10-kilometre Marmot Hill Climb with a time of 30:55 at a rate of 19.4 km/h. Christopher Wash won the 100-kilometre Medio Fondo with a time of 3:10:14, and Patrick Mroczek won the 65-kilometre Piccolo with a time of 2:10:58.

GRAZ, Austria (AP) — A former student opened fire at a school in Austria’s second-biggest city on Tuesday, killing nine people and wounding at least 12 others before taking his own life, authorities said. There was no immediate information on the motive of the 21-year-old man, who had no previous police record. He used two weapons, which he was believed to have owned legally, police said.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are opening higher on Wall Street following a better-than-expected report on the U.S. job market. The S&P 500 index rose 1% in early trading Friday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 429 points, or 1%, and the Nasdaq composite rose 1.2%. U.S. employers slowed their hiring last month, but still added a solid 139,000 jobs amid uncertainty over President Donald Trump’s trade wars. Lululemon Athletica sank after lowering its profit forecast for the full year.

VANCOUVER — British Columbia's power utility wants to boost the province's baseload electricity generation capacity in a bid to meet the province's growing demand from residents and industries. Baseload capacity refers to constant and stable power sources, with Energy Minister Adrian Dix announcing BC Hydro's request for expression of interest from companies to provide geothermal or hydroelectric projects to expand long-term power capacity and meet peak demand.
