BC Hydro seeks baseload power boost from stable sources

VANCOUVER — British Columbia's power utility wants to boost the province's baseload electricity generation capacity in a bid to meet the province's growing demand from residents and industries. Baseload capacity refers to constant and stable power sources, with Energy Minister Adrian Dix announcing BC Hydro's request for expression of interest from companies to provide geothermal or hydroelectric projects to expand long-term power capacity and meet peak demand.

JASPER – Amid a continuing need following the 2024 wildfire, the Jasper Food Bank is not planning to take a break this summer. Blaine Wylde, operations manager at the Jasper Food Bank, noted that many residents depended on summer income. “Without having that last year, that set them back quite a bit, and we just see that there’s still quite a bit of need right now as people are still trying to get back their savings and whatnot,” Wylde said.

LAKE LOUISE – Ground has been broken on Lake Louise Ski Resort’s 200-acre expansion that will include a new ski chairlift and terrain. Clearing has begun at Richardson’s Ridge, located at the backside of the Banff National Park ski resort along Pika run, which will have four named runs and two to three gladed side country trails, with a wide natural area on the top. "On powder days, it's going to be amazing over there," said Emmett McPartlin, director of marketing and sales at the ski resort.

HINTON – The Hinton RCMP detachment is asking the Town to unfreeze one position to focus on traffic enforcement and education. Staff Sgt. Shiloh Fragomeni, detachment commander of the Hinton RCMP, told council on Tuesday (May 27) there was no contract for photo enforcement, and Hinton Municipal Enforcement has one officer out of two currently staffed.
Two EV charging stations may be installed near Activity Centre

JASPER – Council will consider approving the establishment of two new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the Activity Centre parking lot with minimal disruption to other users. The charging stations would be installed through an agreement for a term of up to 15 years with SureCharge Corp., which would bear the costs of the installation and ongoing operation of these stations.

JASPER – The municipality may establish a two-year-term position to oversee municipal infrastructure reconstruction projects following the 2024 wildfire. Courtney Donaldson, director of operations and utilities, told council on Tuesday (May 27) that the construction co-oordinator would also manage cost recovery from third-party damage to municipal infrastructure such as sidewalks, curbs and roads. Council is expected to decide on the matter at next week’s meeting.

It’s tragic and frightening that we’ve reached a point where “geoengineering” is proposed as necessary to slow or reverse global heating. Many refer to it as an “emergency brake” or “last ditch effort.” The real solution is to stop extracting and burning fossil fuels and to protect and restore natural ecosystems — something we should have been doing for decades and that we need to step up before it’s too late.
