Saxophonist and UI jazz department head Damani Phillips was entranced with the music of Spyro Gyra from the first moment he heard their pop hit “Morning Dance.” And in the 40+ years since, he has continued to appreciate the depth and texture behind the band’s deceptively approachable music. As KGAN’s Iowa Traveler, he roamed the state interviewing quirky people and sharing unique stories. After leaving KGAN, he was news director and morning news anchor at KMRY. But it was at KCCK that Cary was able to follow his true passion, big band and swing music. He was a noted fan and expert on the live and music Glenn Miller.
