Washington softball is looking to continue one of the program’s most successful stretches, as a 24-12 record last year gave the Demons back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in over a decade. Washington’s success has largely been powered by their offense.

The Lone Tree Lions are preparing to throw the first pitch of a new baseball season tonight. Lone Tree had a record of 7-14 last year, including four wins in conference play, but they will bring back the reigning Southeast Iowa Super Conference North Player of the Year in Emmett Burke. The junior led the conference with a .467 batting average in 2024 and finished with seven doubles, 19 runs scored and 18 stolen bases.

There’s no better sign that summer has arrived then high school baseball season starting after Memorial Day, and two local teams will meet on the diamond tonight on KCII when the Highland Huskies host the Washington Demons. It’s the season opener for Washington, who is looking to improve on a 5-21 record last year and end a stretch of three straight losing seasons. The Demon lineup will be led by junior Kael Williams, who had team highs of a .320 batting average and 24 runs scored.

The Keota Eagles are getting another summer of baseball underway and looking to get back on the winning side of things. A record of 10-11 last year meant Keota fell just one game shy of a winning season for a second straight year. The Eagles bring back young but talented hitters like freshman Blake Baker, who had a .375 batting average and 18 runs batted in as a rookie. Sophomore Brennan McGuire also returns after hitting .320 and driving in 16 runs.

The Washington Master Gardeners will be offering a flower arranging class this evening. Beginning at 6:30 p.m, join the Master Gardeners at the Washington County Extension Office for a flower arrangement tutorial. They ask that attendees bring their own vase and flowers or greens if they have them. If not, materials will be available on-site for a $10 charge.
