It's minutes before the day’s first lunch customers show up at the Soldotna Senior Center. Kitchen staff expect lunch to be busier than normal, which is common at the start of the spring. That’s when snowbirds begin arriving on the central Kenai Peninsula. Soldotna Senior Center Executive Director Lisa Riley says during peak summer months, the center sees anywhere from 10 to 20 more in-house meals served a day. “It's much busier around here," Riley said.

Last month, a small crowd at Cook Inletkeeper's Community Action Studio in Soldotna voted on salmon conservation plans that were pitched by community members. It’s part of the environmental group’s “Local Solution” series, which has previously led to small-scale solar and composting projects on the Kenai Peninsula. It’s now looking to protect juvenile salmon.

There’s a lot of uncertainty right now for funding in the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. It’s dealing with a $17 million budget deficit and some teachers fear that electives, like art, could be on the chopping block. But earlier this month at the Kenai Art Center, the energy was cheerful. Students, parents and teachers celebrated artwork created in the district’s schools at the art center’s 34th annual student art show.

With more than 40 schools today separated by land, water and culture, it’s no surprise that the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District has been called the “most unique in America” by current superintendent Clayton Holland. But its one-of-a-kind dynamic goes back to the school district’s preformative days. On view at the Kenai Chamber of Commerce are more than 80 artifacts documenting the region’s early education system.
