MPs expenses details published

The first MPs expenses, for the new parliament, have been published. They cover the period from July to November 2024. Newbury’s MP, Lee Dillon claimed a total of £36,043.23 in expenses for the period, which includes funds to rent a second home in London. This compares to these neighbouring MPs who also claim a second home in London to enable them to do their jobs: Kit Malthouse, MP for North West Hampshire claimed £39,590.46 and Danny Kruger, MP for East Wiltshire claimed £47,491.44.
Lib Dems win Thatcham by-elections

35 Views elections, thatcham, West Berkshire Two Lib Dems have been voted in after elections in Thatcham yesterday (Thursday). The council ward seat on West Berkshire Council, vacated by MP Lee Dillon in Thatcham North East, was won by Tom McCann. Mark Thomas won the Thatcham Town Council seat, after results were declared around midnight. “A strong pair of wins for us. Our vote has held up well and we fought a good campaign,” said West Berkshire Council’s Lib Dem leader Jeff Brooks.
Duck feeders aim to help ducks and water quality

Two new solar-powered duck feeders have come to Newbury. The machines are located by the canalside in Victoria Park and at Lock Island.
Dozens of tractors make some noise in Northbrook Street

Our photo above shows the first of several dozen tractors making their way down Newbury’s main street on Saturday just after 6 pm, surprising early evening pedestrians. The remarkable display, including bright lights and tuneful loud horns, capped a day of protest by local farmers. Throughout Saturday, over 120 tractors were amassed in the showground of Newbury racecourse.
New “Old Town” plans lodged

The new Kennet Centre redevelopment plans have gone in. These plans are for the ‘Old Town’ version – the one with individual mews houses. The opening paragraph of the design statement says they are to “enhance the Newbury Conservation Area by restoring the look, feel and character of – this part of – Newbury”.
West Berks bin collections: most don’t want collection changes

Moves to reduce black bin collections to once every three weeks moves a step closer this week. West Berkshire Council’s waste strategy is to get the once over from scrutineers, who will rake through the detail of plans which will save the council £150k a year. More than 5,000 people responded to a public consultation on the matter. Most of them do not want a reduction in the frequency of refuse collections.
West Berkshire could join with South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse

West Berkshire could join forces with the Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire councils in a bid to become a new unitary authority. But it looks like Swindon is being left out in the cold. Swindon wants to look East rather than West to join up. It is all part of the local government reorganisation, and the initial proposal is a response to an announcement by the Government in December 2024 which will see two-tier authorities, as seen in Oxfordshire, end and new unitary councils created.

++Paddington has been found! Two arrests made

Thames Valley Police has made two arrests and recovered a Paddington Bear statue that was stolen from Newbury. Shortly after 2am today (2/3), the statue in Northbrook Street was smashed in half, with the broken piece stolen. Officers from the Newbury Neighbourhood Policing Team have arrested two 22-year-old men, both from Basingstoke, on suspicion of theft and criminal damage today. They remain in police custody. The officers also seized the damaged Paddington Bear statue.
