Two new solar-powered duck feeders have come to Newbury. The machines are located by the canalside in Victoria Park and at Lock Island.

Our photo above shows the first of several dozen tractors making their way down Newbury’s main street on Saturday just after 6 pm, surprising early evening pedestrians. The remarkable display, including bright lights and tuneful loud horns, capped a day of protest by local farmers. Throughout Saturday, over 120 tractors were amassed in the showground of Newbury racecourse.

The new Kennet Centre redevelopment plans have gone in. These plans are for the ‘Old Town’ version – the one with individual mews houses. The opening paragraph of the design statement says they are to “enhance the Newbury Conservation Area by restoring the look, feel and character of – this part of – Newbury”.

Moves to reduce black bin collections to once every three weeks moves a step closer this week. West Berkshire Council’s waste strategy is to get the once over from scrutineers, who will rake through the detail of plans which will save the council £150k a year. More than 5,000 people responded to a public consultation on the matter. Most of them do not want a reduction in the frequency of refuse collections.

West Berkshire could join forces with the Vale of White Horse and South Oxfordshire councils in a bid to become a new unitary authority. But it looks like Swindon is being left out in the cold. Swindon wants to look East rather than West to join up. It is all part of the local government reorganisation, and the initial proposal is a response to an announcement by the Government in December 2024 which will see two-tier authorities, as seen in Oxfordshire, end and new unitary councils created.
