KFAI-FM (Minn/St. Paul, MN)
KFAI is a community radio station run by volunteers, dedicated to sharing information, arts, and entertainment that reflects the diverse backgrounds of its audience. By amplifying voices that are often overlooked or misrepresented by traditional media, KFAI promotes understanding among various communities and upholds democratic values and social justice. This non-commercial FM station broadcasts at 90.3 MHz in Minneapolis and 106.7 MHz in St. Paul. It operates under the guidance of a volunteer Board of Directors, with a small team of full-time and part-time staff, alongside more than 300 volunteers. In 2017, KFAI's budget was around $850,000. KFAI relies on listener support, with over 2,700 members providing nearly 25% of its funding. It also receives financial backing from organizations such as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, the National Endowment for the Arts, the State of Minnesota, the McKnight Foundation, the Bush Foundation, the Otto Bremer Foundation, and various local businesses and program sponsors. Since its inception in 1978, KFAI has expanded its broadcast signal significantly in 1982, 1994, and 2008, now operating at 900 watts.
