KFSK is a community-focused, non-profit radio station located in Petersburg, Alaska, broadcasting at 100.9 FM and reaching listeners through four additional translators. The Petersburg Borough is sending a letter to Alaska’s congressional delegation expressing concern over proposed federal funding cuts. That’s after the borough assembly voted in favor of the move at a meeting on March 3. Liz Cabrera is Petersburg’s economic director, but she said she was speaking for herself when urging the assembly to approve the letter. She said programs and organizations in Petersburg could be negatively impacted by the proposed funding cuts.

Tight school budget means less gym and swim for grade schoolers

Elementary students in Petersburg won’t get as much physical education next year. Rae C. Stedman Elementary Principal Heather Conn said it comes down to limited education funding. Renting Petersburg’s community pool and gym is expensive for the Petersburg School District. So is staffing physical education classes. Conn said the district’s tight budget this year means they will have to reduce hours. “We have been conservatively budgeting but at this time, even we are being affected,” she said.

The Petersburg High School basketball teams played their rivals for a second time this season when the Petersburg Vikings took on the Wolves for Wrangell’s homecoming games. Both coaches describe the away games as competitive and physical, and they both say their players have improved enormously in the last couple of monthsLady Vikings coach Matt Pawuk said the girls played their best game of the season against Wrangell on Friday.
Federal firings "could impact Petersburg's economy"

At least nine U.S. Forest Service employees in Petersburg lost their jobs over the weekend. That’s after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on February 11 directing the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, to reduce the federal workforce. Petersburg has around 3,300 residents, about 80 of which are federal employees. And around 60 of them work for the U.S. Forest Service.

The Petersburg Borough Assembly will hear an annual report from the Petersburg Police Department at tonight’s meeting. The report shows the number of arrests police made in 2024 was in line with the last couple of years, at 81. And the report shows total calls to the police department went up slightly last year to 3,279, from 2,995 in 2023.
Petersburg residents rally in support of federal workers

Roughly 240 people gathered outside Petersburg’s courthouse on Main Street on February 17 to show support for recently fired federal employees. An unknown number of U.S. Forest Service workers in Petersburg have lost their jobs in recent days. The rally was also organized to protest cuts to federal funding and “diversity, equity, and inclusion discrimination.” Petersburg’s protest was one of many held around the nation on Monday.

The guest speaker for Petersburg’s upcoming chamber of commerce banquet will be talking about the economic benefits of outdoor recreation. Mariyam Medovaya is a coordinator for the Alaska Long Trail project, which aims to connect Seward and Fairbanks through existing and future trails. Medovaya told KFSK’s Hannah Flor that she grew up hiking with her parents in her native Russia. She says she moved to Alaska in 2008 partly because of the Alaskan wilderness.
Petersburg's middle school robotics team qualifies for nationals

Listen here:Petersburg’s middle school robotics team’s winning project in the innovation category wasn’t fully complete at the state competition. It was too dangerous. “They’ll have spikes,” eighth grader Jackson Kandoll explained, “And they’ll swing forward, and latch onto the ice.” The team took first place in the category – meant to help solve real-world problems. The category is one of four the team competed in at the state competition in Anchorage.
