The Petersburg Borough is sending a letter to Alaska’s congressional delegation expressing concern over proposed federal funding cuts. That’s after the borough assembly voted in favor of the move at a meeting on March 3. Liz Cabrera is Petersburg’s economic director, but she said she was speaking for herself when urging the assembly to approve the letter. She said programs and organizations in Petersburg could be negatively impacted by the proposed funding cuts.

The Petersburg Borough Assembly will look at a few revenue-generating ideas during today’s noon meeting. Assembly member Bob Lynn put the discussion items on the agenda. He says he wants to find creative ways to bring in more money to the borough. The budget is tight again this year. Last year the Petersburg borough’s budget was nearly $400 thousand in the hole.

Elementary students in Petersburg won’t get as much physical education next year. Rae C. Stedman Elementary Principal Heather Conn said it comes down to limited education funding. Renting Petersburg’s community pool and gym is expensive for the Petersburg School District. So is staffing physical education classes. Conn said the district’s tight budget this year means they will have to reduce hours. “We have been conservatively budgeting but at this time, even we are being affected,” she said.

The Petersburg High School basketball teams played their rivals for a second time this season when the Petersburg Vikings took on the Wolves for Wrangell’s homecoming games. Both coaches describe the away games as competitive and physical, and they both say their players have improved enormously in the last couple of monthsLady Vikings coach Matt Pawuk said the girls played their best game of the season against Wrangell on Friday.

At least nine U.S. Forest Service employees in Petersburg lost their jobs over the weekend. That’s after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on February 11 directing the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, to reduce the federal workforce. Petersburg has around 3,300 residents, about 80 of which are federal employees. And around 60 of them work for the U.S. Forest Service.
