During the last Democratic mayoral debate there was a heated exchange, actually several heated exchanges, between the two frontrunners Zohran Mamdani and Andrew Cuomo. This particular one occurred during a discussion, again not surprisingly, of antisemitism. Within a few minutes of each other, both men invoked the name of Ed Koch, the three-term mayor of New York who served in that job from 1978-1989.

Over the last ten days or so, one Democratic US Senator, Alex Padilla of California, was removed from a room and handcuffed for trying to ask a member of Trump’s cabinet a question, and the New York City Comptroller Brad Lander was manhandled and arrested for the crime of demanding to see a warrant. The warrant was never produced. Between those two events a Democratic lawmaker in the state of Minnesota was shot and killed by a anti-choice zealot.

Monday marks the tenth anniversary of Donald Trump descending on that now famous escalator at Trump towers to announce his first presidential campaign. Since that day, Trump has been the central figure in American politics. He has been the person, even when out of office and not in the middle of a campaign, around whom, for better or worse-and almost always for worse-American politics has revolved.

When looking at the events of the past few days in Los Angeles it is essential to understand that for authoritarian leaders of any kind maintaining the loyalty of the security forces is an absolute top priority. An authoritarian leader who cannot depend on those security forces will always be vulnerable.

The spat between Elon Musk and Donald Trump has deepened in recent days. It is too early to know how this will end, and it is certainly possible that the two will reconcile. The rift itsels is altogether surprising as the political marriage between Musk and Trump while enormously beneficial for both men for some time, was always one of convenience.

Last night the nine leading candidates for the Democratic nomination for Mayor of New York City met in a debate. Voting ends on June 24th, so time is running out in a race where many of the candidates have struggled to break through. This race occurs as Donald Trump’s regime is attacking immigrants, an issue that effects New York deeply, seeking to destroy the city’s greatest university and pass legislation that would make life for poor Americans even more difficult.

A charitable way to describe the Democratic Party since the Donald Trump’s victory in the November election is that they have struggled to find their sea legs. Many Democratic elected officials have been unable to develop either a message or strategy that inspires or mobilizes voters. A significant exception to this has been the relative success progressives and Democrats have enjoyed in attacking the Trump regime by explaining that it is an oligarchy.

One of the few concrete data points that we can see from Daniel Lurie‘s first few months in office is the sharp increase in deaths in San Francisco from fentanyl overdoses. While it is inaccurate to blame this entirely on the new mayor who has been an office for less than half a year, and took office in the midst of a fentanyl crisis, we can still learn a bit about his mayoralty, and his governing style from his muted response to this.
