KWSB-FM (Gunnison, CO)

KWSB-FM is a college radio station located at Western State College of Colorado in Gunnison. Since its launch in January 1968, the station has been continuously broadcasting and recently marked its 40th anniversary with celebrations that included alumni and former staff members. During the 1970s, it stood out as the sole station in the Gunnison area that offered a variety of popular music, moving beyond just country tunes. This unique identity has made it popular among both students and local residents. KWSB-FM boasts one of the largest vinyl collections among college radio stations in the state. Over the years, its team has earned several accolades for outstanding broadcasting from the Colorado Broadcasters Association, enhancing the college's reputation. As a non-commercial station, it serves the Gunnison community and operates on a budget supported by local underwriting and the communications department. The station is entirely run by students, who receive guidance from a faculty advisor in communications. Often referred to as "The Penguin" or "Quizbee" by students and staff, KWSB-FM also offers live DJ opportunities to students enrolled in the Communication and Theatre 261 course and delivers news to the local community.
