Founded in 1896, The Observer is a newspaper that caters to the communities of Union and Wallowa counties in Oregon. Its main office is located in La Grande, which is the county seat of Union County. The newspaper is published three times a week on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons, reaching an audience of over 11,000 readers. The Observer is part of Western Communications, a family-run business based in Bend, which also owns other newspapers in Baker City, Brookings, and Redmond, as well as in Crescent City and Sonora, California.

This year it’s Ray “Red” and Elsie Evans. And it’s not hard to see why. The couple has lived all (Red) or most (Elsie) of their lives here and is devoted to the little town of about 900 population. True, many of the storefronts in town are vacant, but residents there hope to see that turn around.

    Published 7:00 am Wednesday, June 18, 2025 WALLOWA LAKE — The 13th annual Dulcimer Week at Wallowa Lake is June 29 to July 5. “It’s a really sweet instrument, and it’s really easy to play,” said Heidi Muller, one of the hosts and director of the event. “You hold it flat on your lap, not upright like a guitar.”Muller said the mountain or Appalachian dulcimer is a smaller version of its German ancestor, the “Scheitholt,” which means scrap of wood.

    Published 6:00 pm Tuesday, June 17, 2025 JOSEPH — The Wallowa Mountain Cruise and Car Show in Joseph is about at the starting line. The event is Friday and Saturday, June 20 and 21. Organizer Alicia Garrett said the Cruise and Car Show was moved back to June to take advantage of better weather. The cruise, formerly known as the Oregon Mountain Cruise, originally was in June, but rainstorms kept occurring, even raining out the cruise portion to Enterprise.

This is down more than $156,000 from this year’s budget, according to the city’s preliminary budget documents. The council adopted the budget by resolution and approved another resolution to make appropriations and levy taxes.

State Rep. Bobby Levy, R-Echo, was unable to attend but sent a video expressing her best wishes that was played for Roberts and those in attendance.
