Andrew Potter quotes his friend Joseph Heath (co-author of their book "The Rebel Sell" which is in my bookcase- great book, btw) on "the myth of shared values," right off the top of your interview. This is such a weirdly pervasive myth, especially among progressives, that it bears repeated invocations as one headline after another scrolls by in this age of social panic.

The news cycle these days is as distressing as it is chaotic. After a nerve-wracking week of tensions between the United States and Canada, President Trump announced another pause in the tariffs on some Canadian goods. Meanwhile, our Parliament is prorogued as the Liberal Party conducts its leadership race, the results of which will be announced tonight.

The political developments in both Canada and the U.S. have been so fast and furious that I have not yet had a chance to touch on the devastating fires in Los Angeles that saw so many people lose their homes. My friend and colleague, the American essayist and podcaster Meghan Daum, is one of them. A month ago, her house in Altadena, California went up in flames, incinerating pretty much everything she owned.

Justin Trudeau took many in the Canadian press by surprise on Friday, sitting down for a one-on-one with CNN anchor Jake Tapper. The Canadian prime minister previously cancelled his year-end interviews with domestic press, and aside from entertaining brief questions at a historic resignation press conference, has been largely MIA. Trudeau is unlikely to find sympathetic journalists in this country right now; the tide has very much turned, and nobody wants to go down with the ship.
