Dear Everyone, Hi –I’ve been losing a bunch of paid subscribers and I have two theories. 1, I’ve been doing way too much and way too vacuous book promo. 2, the economy. If it’s the first, I want to offer an apology. My venture into being more PR-ish and business-woman-who-gives-keynotes-talks-y than comes the least bit naturally to me – let’s chalk that up to a midlife/new-to-parenthood/fear-of-losing-my-career crisis.

Hi Everyone,I wanted to let you know that my and Sarah Manguso’s new book Questions Without Answers will be out next week. It’s a litany of questions asked by children, chosen by Sarah, illustrated by me. They’re intuitive, existential, and funny – the perfect thing to if you want to induce a dream-like, expansive state (no transcendental meditation necessary). Kids seem to like it too. I just got my copies – it came out gorgeous.

Hi Everyone,First of all, thank you for being here — I’m so grateful that you are. I’m sorry I️ missed my post last week. I️ can somehow never foresee that school vacation might = an even slower pace of work. Brains are fascinating that way. It was a nice week, though. Having two kids makes me want less to get away from my son in order to be with my work and vice versa, and more want to get away from one kid to be with the other kid - which is less mind-bending, more of a good multitask.

Hi Everyone,This is a post of drawings, which my occupied/unoccupied brain has been thinking in feverishly - weirdly, being home with a baby puts me back in the pre-kid state where I️ spent a lot of time wandering around, riding subways, going to and from things, idly coming up with little drawings. (The hormones don’t hurt, either).

This book is a collection of the kinds of questions kids ask that at first seem wildly out of left field, but only because they’re actually truer and deeper than the stuff of daily life. They are also unanswerable.

Hi Everyone. This week’s newsletter is about doing everything: specifically moving an entire family while very pregnant. The move was terrible, and it’s already hard to write about, because you can’t write while you’re doing something so hectic, and you can’t remember afterwards. Everyone agrees that moving is awful, but it still feels like it’s particularly awful only for me. It started a month ago, with packing. First books and summer clothes, then toys, then plates and cups, then linens and coats.

This week I’m going to post some more New Yorker cartoon rejects. I’d like to write something more essay-like (not because an essay is better but because I️ can’t bear to part with them) but WE’RE MOVING (oh and also I’m about to give birth) and my brain feels like a dense fruit cake, the less said about that the better. I do keep having ideas for drawings, but they’re unusable, like the drawing ideas you have in a dream. In this case, they’re exclusively about contractors.

Hello again. Every week, I make cartoons for the New Yorker, the dear, always two-steps-ahead pinnacle of culture that represents, more than anything else, New York, sophistication, wit, and in some specific ways America, and which celebrates its hundredth birthday this month. Under ideal circumstances, I spend two or three days a week drawing cartoons for the magazine, and, under ideal circumstances, the magazine buys one. I’ve almost never published the ones they don’t buy. Why?
