Individual dies by suicide in McIntosh Building

A suicide by hanging in the McIntosh Humanities Building at Long Beach State has been reported by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office. The male is reported to have hung himself in the stairwell of the building, according to the coroner’s office. “I can confirm the Department of Medical Examiner responded to a death at the 1200 block of North Bellflower Blvd. in Long Beach on May 15,” said Medical Examiner PIO Kelly Vail.

UPD search for suspects in campus armed carjacking

A Timely Warning Crime Bulletin released the description of two robbery suspects involved in stealing a car at gunpoint early April 26 on campus. At around 2 a.m. Friday, Long Beach State’s UPD received a report of an armed robbery in which two suspects approached a man leaning on his car in the G8 Parking Lot. “The male suspect brandished a gun and told the adult male to give him the keys to his car,” Friday’s email said.
Psych Day at the Beach returns for another year

The 52nd annual Psych Day, the largest event of the year put on by the psychology department at Long Beach State, was celebrated on April 18 at the Psychology Quad. Held by the Psychology Student Association, the six-hour long showcase featured an array of informational tents, booths and both undergraduate and graduate student research projects.

The Long Beach State women’s tennis team dominated UC Irvine on Friday afternoon at Rhodes Tennis Center and blanked the Anteaters 7-0 on Senior Day. The Beach did not lose a set in what was arguably its most dominant team win of the year, building steam for the Big West Championships next week. “It was a really strong team performance,” head coach Jenny Hilt-Costello said.

Long Beach went all out during Cambodian New Year’s, or Sursedey Chnam Thmey, on Sunday, April 7 at 9 a.m. Laughter and pride filled the air, as children gleefully played with silly strings and bubble guns, while attendees proudly displayed broad smiles throughout the event. The Cambodian festival brought people from all backgrounds together to admire vintage cars and dance from sunrise to sunset to celebrate the Cambodian New Year.
Rare solar eclipse brings crowds to campus

brought swarms of students to enjoy the event Monday afternoon. With their protective glasses, telescopes to view the eclipse and cameras in the air, everyone was ready to see the moon cover the sun. Joel Zinn, an assistant professor in the Physics and Astronomy department, said they ran out of eclipse glasses and the event was beyond his wildest dreams. Zinn said everyone in the US, Mexico and Canada could view the partial eclipse.
