When thems. (with a period) showed up in 2022, the mission was simple: put on some art events that would bring together some unknown talent, gather people who wear cool outfits, and maybe, just maybe, build a community around Phoenix's notoriously undervalued queer art scene. One of their first ideas was a poetry night: a throwback to cafe culture of the 60's and something that many of us had thought was going to be a bad hangover from the 90's.

When Tami Staas was first called a “groomer” and perverted on a popular far-right blog site, she decided it wasn’t worth giving the article any more attention than it already received. When another post leaked her name and home address, she still didn’t feel it was worth pushing back or giving the post more publicity. And when she received threatening packages in her mailbox, she again didn’t want to give recognition to the groups pushing the harassment.

Phoenix Pride is one of the largest LGBTQ+ nonprofits in the state, with a multi-million dollar budget built off organizing events such as the Rainbow Festival and the annual Phoenix Pride Festival held in Steele Indian School Park. And while their events attract tens of thousands of attendees each year, a growing number of people have expressed concerns about the organization’s business model and relationship with the community.
