    The latest Resilient Youth: State of the Nation Report has revealed Australia’s young people are still struggling mentally. However, for the first time since reporting began in 2019, student wellbeing has stabilised or slightly improved, breaking a worrying trend of year-on-year declines. More than 149,000 students from 800 schools across Australia complete the annual Resilience Survey, with the University of Adelaide and Resilient Youth Australia analysing the results.

    Two University of Adelaide projects using nanotechnology have received funding in the latest round of Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) Early-to-Mid Career Researchers funding. Associate Professor Jiawen Li, School of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering and Institute for Photonics and Advanced Sensing (IPAS), and Dr Yannan Yang, South Australian Immunogenomics Cancer Institute (SAiGENCI), will share in $5 million for their research into cardiovascular risk and brain cancer, respectively.

    The researchers looked at the bioavailability of micronutrients in products that are available to the public on supermarket shelves and were surprised at their discovery. “We found that all the pulse products, like chickpea and lentil flours, were excellent sources of micronutrients,” says Thi Diem Nguyen, a PhD candidate in the School of Agriculture, Food and Wine.

    Researchers have identified a novel mechanism through which a protein in barley supports female fertility and could help safeguard yield security in the future. University of Adelaide’s Professor Matthew Tucker, Interim Director of the Waite Research Institute, led a team that found the protein, MADS31, functions in barley and bread wheat to create safe environments for seeds.

    MS Australia has recognised the work of University of Adelaide’s Dr Iain Comerford with a $25,000 Incubator Grant. Dr Comerford, of the School of Biological Sciences, and his team are investigating how immune cells interact in the hope of discovering a new treatment for people with Multiple Sclerosis. More than 2.8 million people across the world, about 33,300 of which are Australian, live with the disease.
