Mark Peplow - Science Journalist
I am a science journalist with over 15 years of experience working as both a reporter and an editor. Before I became a freelancer in January 2013, I served as the chief news editor at Nature magazine for four years, where I led the global news team and published many exclusive stories both in print and online. Prior to that, I edited Chemistry World magazine from 2006 to 2008, after spending two years as a reporter at Nature. Currently, I live and work near Cambridge, UK. My writing covers a wide range of topics within the physical sciences, including astrophysics, planetary sciences, chemistry, materials science, and Earth and environmental science. I have reported on groundbreaking discoveries at major conferences, documented the study of comet dust for the first time, and explored the desolate areas of Chernobyl’s exclusion zone. I am known for producing clear and concise articles under tight deadlines. As an editor, I have commissioned and refined articles on a variety of scientific topics, from advancements in genome sequencing to the peculiarities of German science policy. My extensive network includes freelancers and distinguished researchers from across the globe. In 2004, I was honored as the ‘New online journalist of the year’ by the UK’s Periodicals Training Council. In 2002, I received the Association of British Science Writers’ award for ‘Best science writing on the world wide web.’ I hold a master’s degree in chemistry from the University of Oxford, a PhD in organometallic chemistry from Imperial College London, and I completed a year as a post-doctoral fellow at McMaster University in Canada, where I researched technetium radiotracers. Additionally, I have an MSc in Science Communication from Imperial.
