Dan Ahlers recalls campaigning for a 2018 South Dakota legislative race in his hometown of Dell Rapids and calling on a household he knew was registered Republican. The woman who answered the door recognized Ahlers from his work in Pierre and said, “Dan, I like you and I appreciate what you stand for, but I can’t vote for you.”When he asked her why, she said, “I just can’t vote for a Democrat.” He lost the election by fewer than 100 votes.

Olson Funeral Chapel Carries on Local Legacy From the time she was a young girl, Autumn Olson told people she wanted to be a funeral director. This might have seemed like an unusual choice for a young girl, and looking back, Autumn is not even sure exactly what inspired that job ambition. Still, she did not waver from that goal, and decades later is proud to be the owner and operator of Olson Funeral Chapel in Britton and Forman, ND. Olson grew up in Wall, South Dakota.

The Britton-Hecla Board of Education held their September meeting this past Wednesday. Much of the time was again spent dealing with district policies. In last month’s meeting, the board adopted a new policy book that included close to 200 policies. Now they are going back and making changes to select policies as needed. Several policies were discussed.

As the summer nears its end, lake residents and visitors in northeastern South Dakota are considering removing docks, pulling in boats and putting away the skis. Lake fun will most definitely be missed. However, one more recent aspect of lake life will likely not be missed at all as colder weather approaches: zebra mussels. The invasive species were found to have inundated both Roy and Clear Lakes in 2023 and this summer, made their largely unwanted presence felt.

Just as she opens her own business in Britton, The Barking Lot, the entrepreneur reflects on her journey that made it all possible. Freeman was born and raised in California.
HOT HARVEST DAYS WAS FUN IN THE SUN

Britton’s 25th Annual Harvest Days was a success again this year. The conditions may have verged on sweltering at 90 degrees both Friday and Saturday, but it didn’t stop people from coming out. The weekend started off with the parade on Friday evening. The theme was Fun in the Sun and folks decked out vehicles, floats, and even horses to make for a festive affair.
B-H SCHOOL BOARD TO ADOPT BUDGET, POLICIES MONDAY

The Britton Hecla Board of Education has a full agenda for their meeting on Monday at 6 p.m. The board will adopt the preliminary budget as official for the next school year and set the mill levy. The levy is determined by the state. The levies are lower than the previous year at the following rates: $1.97 per $1,000 for ag land, $2.69 for owner-occupied houses and $5.44 for commercial properties. The special education rate will be $1.28 for all three classes.
WEDNESDAY STORM CAUSES DESTRUCTION

Last Wednesday, a fierce storm blew into Journal Country. The event brought torrents of rain for some, a little hail and most destructive of all, incredibly powerful winds. In the aftermath, widespread damage was noted. The storm became increasingly concerning mid-morning Wednesday when the National Weather Service (NWS) warned of the potential for 70 mile per hour winds and quarter size hail. That report did not due justice for what was about to come, however.
