To start with: “Matter over Bridge” is not an official term. The phrase isn’t used in the Matter smart home standard itself. Instead, it originated in the marketing departments of various manufacturers who use it to label certain types of devices. Specifically, it refers to products that aren’t Matter-certified on their own but can still connect to Matter platforms like Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, or SmartThings via a certified bridge.

Since version 1.3, the Matter standard has included support for energy monitoring. Devices that support this feature can report information like power usage in watts or energy consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh) – a key requirement for energy management within Matter-based smart homes. The measured values can be used, for example, to create automations if a threshold value is exceeded or not reached.

This time, there’s no major version jump: The regular spring update to the Matter specifications doesn’t carry the expected version number 1.5. Instead, the Connectivity Standards Alliance is releasing an interim step (link). Following Matter 1.4 comes version 1.4.1 – labeled a “minor release” by the CSA. Going forward, a second decimal point in the version number will indicate smaller updates that have “no major new device types or flagship features”.
