God has opened the door for me to go on a short-term mission trip to Istanbul, Turkey with Scottsdale Bible Church June 27 – July 6, 2025. We will be sharing God’s love and will be serving the Lord by ministering to Syrian refugees living in Turkey. God is opening my eyes to a world that is in desperate need of understanding the love of Jesus. While it would be so easy to remain in my comfort zone and let others go on this trip, I am convinced that God is asking me to be a part of the team.

I have a theory as to why there is so much written about the Pharisees’ running battle with Jesus in the Gospel narratives. One thing that comes through loud and clear in the recorded stories is that the Pharisees were motivated by pride in their position and pride in what their supposed superior righteousness. The problem with pride is that it is so easy to spot in others and so difficult to identify in ourselves. We read about the pharisees and can easily point to their pride and error.

In my quiet time this morning I was reminded that we Christians have an amazing capacity to selectively apply Scripture to our lives. Perhaps it is only me that has this capacity, but my observation of Christendom give credence to the thought that we all struggle with this. We give in to the pull to ignore the bits that make us uncomfortable due to our pride, or preconceptions of how things ought to be. Worse yet, we sometimes use scripture to justify our unforgiveness or condemnation of others.

Human leaders will fail us, no matter how good their intentions. Psalm 23 reminds us that God alone is the shepherd that will care for us no matter what. I am comforted that the men who God used to turn the world upside down had moments when they just did not get it. They, at times, were just as obtuse and blind as I often am. Recently, I received an email with a link to a Youtube video.

I am not the first, and certainly not the most eloquent, writer who has reflected on Emmanuel as one of the names for Jesus, the Messiah. This reflection, in no small part, has be influenced by the movie “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” which was released a little while ago. If Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us, then that truth changes everything. Having grown up with this knowledge has desensitized me to it somewhat, but the truth remains.

Have you ever sat through a sermon on a Sunday, thinking that the preacher was doing well, only to walk away not remembering the point of the sermon? I have experienced a sermon or two after which I remembered the opening joke or a touching illustration but did not remember anything about the Biblical text for the message. In contrast, I have also experienced “meat and potatoes” preaching that was not flashy or great oratory but helped me learn Scripture and apply it to my life.
But what are they for so many?

There are so many problems in our culture that it is easy to become overwhelmed just by listening to the news. Certainly, to get improved ratings the news curators pick stories based on their shock value, so things are likely not as bad as what the media outlets portray. But still, our own experience validates the fact that there is much brokenness in our world.

Politicians often accuse their opponents of lying. What does the effectiveness of this accusation show us about our need for truth? When things are not to our liking, it is easy to develop a grumbling spirit. Recently two verses warned me against this; I share them here. Humans are inherently religious, and when they deny the Creator, they will fasten on to something within creation and elevate it to an object of worship.

J Gresham Machen published a book in the 1920s describing the challenge facing the church of his day. I’m finding that some of what he predicted as the result of cultural trends in his time is impressively applicable 100 years after his writing. The opening verses of Matthew 5 are commonly referred to as the Beatitudes. Each of the nine beatitudes begins with “Blessed are . . .” and then provides a condition for blessing.
