Excerpted Transcript of CommentsOne of the leaders asked me to start something near and dear to my heart: a buffalo ranch. I got so excited. Our first buffalo herd included seven of them. We got them from Wind Cave National Park. I couldn’t see just doing the buffalo. I knew we could resurrect this farm.

The air we breathe. The water we drink. The soil from which our food grows. The building blocks of life are basic elements, without which we could not survive. It can be easy to forget that — unless pollutants corrode these fundamentals. Similarly, it is little moments and connections that sustain us. Decades ago, in a novel I was writing, I included an elderly woman who encouraged the young protagonist to spend time every evening recollecting a special moment or lesson from that day.

But beyond the ceremonies and speeches lies another, often invisible war, one that too many of our veterans and active-duty service members are still fighting. Countless veterans struggle with substance use disorders, suicidal ideation, and an increasing risk of drug overdose.
