Mslexia is a UK-based magazine dedicated to women writers, established by Debbie Taylor and currently edited by Daneet Steffens. The publication features insightful articles about writing and authors, while also promoting independent publishers, bookstores, and new ideas in the literary world. Notable contributors include esteemed writers such as Patricia Duncker, Sara Maitland, Trezza Azzopardi, Amanda Craig, and Linda Leatherbarrow. Since its debut in March 1999, Mslexia has been released quarterly and has garnered around 11,000 subscribers.

I’m going to talk about creativity. Women’s creativity, to be more specific. Women writers’ creativity, to be even more specific. And I’m going to use the wise and wondrous Fay Weldon as a case study. I grew up reading Fay Weldon. Long before I became a writer myself, I was being challenged and shocked and entertained by her novels, pouncing on each new one as soon as it came out in paperback. The early ones are still on my bookshelf in a long, brittle, yellowing row.

It’s unclear how this question relates to the writer’s book, which is a biography of a man who fled the Russian pogroms early last century and went on to become a brilliant, if little known, artist.

Anchovy The small fish circle the tank, freshly sharpened knives flashing in the downlights of the aquarium. Moving as one, the school becomes a switchblade tossed from hand to hand. She unwraps a mint, places it in her mouth and glances at her watch, despite knowing she is early. She looks back to the tank and notices one fish is slightly slower than the rest, its movements out of time, each turn a fraction too late. 'Mummy!' She isn’t ready, hasn’t steeled herself.
