The Munster Express is a weekly publication that serves the regions of Waterford City and County, South Kilkenny, Carrick-on-Suir, South Tipperary, New Ross, and South Wexford. Founded in 1859, it stands as the top-selling newspaper in the south-east of Ireland, catering to a population exceeding 100,000. In May 1996, Munster Express Online was launched, making it one of the earliest provincial newspapers to establish an online presence in Ireland. Today, the website attracts more than 175,000 visitors every month.

    The Grangemore inpatient mental health centre at St. Otteran’s Hospital, Waterford, has received a 100 percent compliance rate with rules, regulations and codes of practice for the fourth year in-a-row, following an unannounced visit by an Inspector of Mental Health Services. The report on Grangemore was one of nine reports published by the Mental Health Commission last week. The other inspection reports related to other approved centres in Tipperary, Limerick, Galway, Mayo and Dublin.

    A quarter of all Co. Waterford pubs that were in operation in 2005 have now closed, a new report has revealed. The report, which was published by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland (DIGI), shows a total of 66 pubs in Co. Waterford have closed their doors in the past 20 years. Neighbouring counties Cork and Tipperary have both experienced even sharper decreases of 31%. Fellow Munster county Limerick saw the biggest decrease, standing at 36%.

    The Munster Express has been shortlisted for an accolade in the Local Ireland Media Awards under the ‘Best Headline’ category. The headline ‘RING THE CHANGES’ which featured in the 10 October, 2023 edition, written by journalist Adam Doheny, is up against several other provincial newspapers for the best headline award – The Limerick Leader ‘HIGH FIVE IN A ROW’, The Southern Star ‘PIER PRESSURE’, and The Anglo-Celt ‘FROM BUST TO BOOM’.

    This week marks the 25th Anniversary of one of the worst disasters in County Waterford, where four members of the Air Corps lost their lives after their helicopter crashed near Tramore. It was one of the most sombre days in living memory for Tramore and the wider community, as well as for the rest of the country.
