Sushi Mambo rolls into second decade in Calistoga

Sushi Mambo chef and co-owner, Jose Cazares, 61, has spent his adult life mastering the art of sushi-making, cooking Japanese food professionally, first in San Francisco’s Japantown, then in Napa, and for the last decade, in Calistoga. In 1981, at age 18, Jose immigrated to San Francisco from the town of Tarimoro in Michoacan, Mexico and began working as a dishwasher at Miyako Sukiyaki, a Japanese hot pot restaurant in Japantown. His first boss, head chef Koichi Inagawa, ran a tight ship.
Calistoga Little League folds after 62 years

Fairgrounds director hired, first event set for September

The city isn’t wasting time when it comes to revitalizing the Fairgrounds property that it officially acquired on July 22. City staff announced recently it had hired a Fairgrounds director. Also, on July 30, the City Council took steps to ensure an event could be booked at the property. Flynn Creek Circus was given a discounted rental rate for the Great Lawn and will perform shows under its big top tent Sept. 12 to 15.
Adventist Health shutters Calistoga Vermeil Clinic

The Vermeil Clinic, owned and operated by Adventist Health St. Helena, closed its doors last Friday after nearly three decades providing healthcare services in Calistoga. An Adventist Health spokesperson told the Tribune this week that the decision to close the 913 Washington St. clinic was made so the healthcare company could “enhance” its efficiencies and “consolidate” its efforts.
Agencies collaborate for trail rescues

In the past two years, an inter-agency rescue operation involving California Highway Patrol’s Air Operations and the Calistoga Fire Department has taken off, so to speak. The Helicopter Rescue Technician (HRT) program originated in the Sierra Nevadas where there was a high need for specialized technicians to assist in rescues in the rugged terrain, said Shaun Bouyea, CHP’s Napa Air Operation Unit spokesperson.

Calistoga resident suffers serious injury following collision with Calistoga Police Sgt.

Calistoga resident Brenda Sarabio was hospitalized Monday night after being struck by a Calistoga Police patrol vehicle as she walked in a crosswalk at the intersection of Washington and Berry streets. Authorities confirmed Wednesday that on-duty Calistoga Police Sgt. Kristine Norton was the driver of the vehicle involved in the accident. Sarabio, 22, was treated at the scene for “major head trauma,” according to authorities at the scene Monday night.
Happy ending in months-long effort to rescue dog

Licorice, a roughly 70-pound puppy who escaped from her new Calistoga home the same day she was adopted, was finally captured last week after spending 72 days on the run. Catching the year-old dog involved a collaborative and painstaking effort between local agencies, volunteers and concerned citizens, who reported sightings and tried to track the dog’s movements until she could be trapped.
