If you look very closely at the background of Lilo and Stitch, you can see Tom Cruise performing death-defying stunts. Sometimes he’s leaping out of an airplane without a parachute. In other scenes, he’s wrestling a very angry, very large grizzly bear. I hear that in the latest and final entry in the series, Ethan Hunt embarks on a truly impossible mission: finding an honest politician! Cruise isn’t credited in either film. He wasn’t even compensated.

In 1981’s Blow Out, Brian De Palma layers one level of voyeurism on top of another, like a Russian nesting doll. At one point, we, the sickos in the audience, are watching from the perspective of a slasher ogling coeds while simultaneously watching a police officer leer at the gyrating nymphets in his midst.

For the past few years, my older sister warned me to expect the worst when I visited my now seventy-seven-year-old dad in the nursing homes where he has lived for the past decade or so. Because I had low expectations, I was always pleasantly surprised by my father’s condition. He’s had Multiple Sclerosis for over half a century. He had not taken good care of himself, yet he was lucid, conversational, and happy to see and talk to me. That, unfortunately, was not true of my last visit.
