The NB Media Co-op operates thanks to the hard work of volunteers from the unceded lands of the Wolastoqiyik/Wəlastəkewiyik/Maliseet, Mi’kmaw, and Passamaquoddy/Peskotomuhkati peoples in New Brunswick, Canada. Each year, we hold an annual general meeting in September where the editorial board and board of directors are chosen.

Anti-poverty campaigners from NB ACORN are calling for a moratorium on NB Power rate hikes and a ban on winter disconnections for residential ratepayers. They launched an “affordable energy platform” on Tuesday, with rallies in Moncton and Fredericton. The protests came as residential rates increased by 9.7 per cent in New Brunswick, the latest in a series of price shocks affecting households across the province. It contributed to an overall increase of about 30 per cent over three years.

Moncton-based artist Lila Donovan Kelly is calling for people to fight back against misogyny. Her new exhibit, titled “We Are Not Going Back” opened at the Moncton Public Library on March 8, International Women’s Day. She spoke to the NB Media Co-op about her multimedia artwork, which features prose-poetry collage and photography, describing it as a response to a rising tide of toxic masculinity.

On International Women’s Day, a crowd marched through the streets of downtown Moncton. Their message: the time is now for feminist economic policies. But for the moment, it remains unclear when the government will put forward key economic legislation promised during last year’s election. Activists called for the provincial Liberal government to follow through on two election promises, namely higher social assistance rates and private-sector pay equity legislation.

Homelessness and the affordable housing crisis were at the top of the agenda during the first Moncton city council meeting of the year. City councillors heard about initiatives meant to help poor and homeless people during public presentations on Monday, after a heavy snowfall covered the city and temperatures dropped into deadly levels of cold.
