School employee sentenced to prison for raping student

A former Taft 7-12 Middle & High School employee has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for raping a 16-year-old. Lincoln County Circuit Court Presiding Judge Sheryl Bachart sentenced 53-year-old Angela Schafer June 24, to 18 months in the Department of Corrections for sexually abusing a Taft High School student while Schafer was employed by the Lincoln County School District (LCSD).

Spruce aphid outbreak detected at Yachats

The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) has launched an investigation into a Sitka spruce aphid outbreak around Yachats on the Central Oregon Coast. Earlier this year the ODF detected the outbreak and now will be assessing the spread of this damage to determine where else it might be occurring along the coast. Spruce aphid is a long-established exotic and invasive insect that experiences periodic outbreaks that injure Sitka spruce along the West Coast, including Oregon.
LCDP to conduct pedestrian safety enforcement

Lincoln City Police Department (LCPD) traffic enforcement team will conduct a Pedestrian Safety Operation between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, on Highway 101 in the area of South 29th Street. “The primary focus of the operation is to raise pedestrian safety awareness,” LCPD Sgt Torin Liden said. Before conducting the enforcement operation, police post warning signs in the area of the enforcement to alert drivers and those on foot.
Proposed ODFW budget closes Otis hatchery, increases fees

The proposed $607 million budget includes a fee step increase for a resident fishing license from $44 to $56 in 2026 and to $56 by 2030. Hunting licenses would increase from $34.50 to $39 in 2026 and to $45 in 2030.

Curb ramp project reaches milestone

Oregon Department of Transportation crews have reached a milestone in repairing and replacing curb ramps in Lincoln City, a $23.2 million project from milepost 112.3 to 118 and from milepost 121.42 to 125 along Highway 101. “We’re excited about the progress so far — we’ve officially passed the halfway mark. Thanks for your patience as we continue making Lincoln City easier to drive, ride, walk and roll through,” ODOT stated in a media release.
