I have always had a soft spot for the philosopher Michel Foucault. This may seem strange, given that Foucault is something of a bête noire on the right, to the point of occasionally being blamed for destroying the entire Western philosophical tradition. In my opinion, the charge is unjust. Such hostility is inevitable, however, given that Foucault’s subject is power and the analysis of power.

However, despite the rather flawed characters leading this peculiar pageant, its title does raise an ironic and undoubtedly fascinating issue.

Progressives raise the gutter to power

Progressives are relentlessly proclaiming that deporting campus antisemites violates US law and due process. However, it is telling that such admonitions are seldom accompanied by chapter and verse. Progressives rarely cite which specific laws or processes are being violated. Instead, they mutter vague shibboleths about amorphous “constitutional rights,” mainly the guarantee of free speech. This studied vagueness is the point. First, chapter and verse would expose their rantings as largely baseless.

In particular, I cited ultra-privileged New York Times columnist Thomas L. Friedman’s bizarre claim that fighting antisemitism in academia is bad because it is in service of a secret Trumpist conspiracy that is somehow the “real” antisemitism.
