Contrary to common perception, what we know about cannabis far exceeds what we don’t. Scientists’ focus on cannabis has increased exponentially in recent years, as has our understanding of the plant, its active constituents, their mechanisms of action, and their effects on the user and upon society. In recent years, researchers have published tens of thousands of scientific papers about cannabis and its constituents, according to a keyword search on the National Library of Medicine website.

Florida already has real-world experience successfully regulating the retail sale and use of medical cannabis. Nearly one million Floridians are now registered with the state to purchase cannabis products from more than 600 licensed retailers. The sky has not fallen, nor will it fall when adult-use similarly becomes legal. Twenty-four states have enacted adult-use legalization. None have ever repealed their laws.

Since its inception, efforts to criminalize marijuana and to stigmatize those who consume it have been based upon hyperbole, stereotypes and outright lies. The initial push for cannabis criminalization, which began in earnest more than a century ago, had little to do with preserving public health or safety. Instead, the move to prosecute cannabis users was based primarily on sensationalism and xenophobia.

At a time when voters and politicians are historically divided, there is one issue that Americans largely agree upon: It’s time to legalize marijuana. Months ago, Vice President Kamala Harris tweeted that “Nobody should have to go to jail for weed.” Despite her past opposition to marijuana legalization, she’s since become the first major presidential nominee to endorse it.
