Office of the Comptroller of the Currency
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) is responsible for issuing charters, overseeing, and regulating all national banks and federal savings associations. Additionally, the OCC supervises the federal branches and agencies of foreign banks. Our mission in overseeing these financial institutions is to ensure they operate safely, responsibly, and in accordance with laws that promote fair treatment for customers and equitable access to financial products and services. The OCC operates as an independent bureau within the U.S. Department of the Treasury. The President appoints the Comptroller, who leads the agency for a five-year term, with the approval of the U.S. Senate. The Comptroller also serves as a director for both the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and NeighborWorks® America.
