Open Markets Institute
The Open Markets Institute is dedicated to tackling the significant threats that corporate concentration and monopoly power pose to our democracy, personal freedoms, and national security. Established as an independent entity in September 2017, Open Markets leverages research and journalism to highlight the risks associated with monopolies. We pinpoint necessary policy and legal reforms and work to inform policymakers, academics, advocacy groups, and other key players about the importance of creating open and competitive markets that foster a strong, fair, and inclusive democracy. We pay special attention to the emerging dangers posed by online "platform monopolies," which impact the free flow of news, information, and ideas. Our team has extensive knowledge of how monopoly power skews outcomes across various industries, including technology, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, and transportation. Before 2017, the Open Markets Team dedicated eight years to researching, discussing, and writing about market concentration issues as part of the Open Markets Program at New America. By merging expertise in policy, law, and market structures with effective communication and outreach strategies, Open Markets aims not only to hold monopolies accountable for their misuse of power but also to create a more equitable economic system that facilitates progress. OUR INITIATIVES INCLUDE: • Highlighting the risks of monopoly power to democracy through original newsletters, op-eds, articles, videos, events, and special features that reach a wide and diverse audience. • Proposing solutions and influencing enforcement and policy at state, federal, and international levels through comprehensive policy reports, testimonies, comment letters, and petitions. • Actively participating in the legal arena by submitting amicus briefs to help shape court decisions related to monopoly power and to educate the wider legal community. • Investing in robust communication and outreach efforts to build a diverse coalition of allies and ensure our ideas gain traction. • Collaborating with civil society and grassroots organizations, such as Freedom From Facebook and 4Competition, to channel collective momentum towards specific policy goals.

The remedies phase for the Department of Justice’s antitrust case against Google’s online search monopoly wrapped up on May 30.
