This post was originally published in October 2023 and updated in April 2025. The Latin Quarter is one of my favorite parts of Paris. I’ll tell you about some of my favorite places to visit in these first few paragraphs, but you can scroll down to find the restaurant recommendations. The Latin Quarter gets its name from the common language that was spoken by students who came study in this neighborhood a thousand years ago.

We’ve rated La Table de Colette as GOOD with two stars * *You can find all our rankings in the Restaurant IndexLa Table de Colette is a sleek restaurant with a sincere approach to sustainable dining. It’s tucked into a small Latin Quarter street, just a stone’s throw from the Pantheon. There’s a lovely garden for outdoor dining in nice weather. It’s a good restaurant to have on your radar.

We’ve rated Café de l’Usine as GREAT with three stars * * *You can find all our rankings in the Restaurant IndexChef Alice Arnoux (following a stint at Le Mermoz) is at the helm of a fascinating new restaurant inside a shoe factory in Belleville. Well, it’s a former factory. The tennis shoes produced by Spring Court, a family-owned company since 1932, are no longer made here inside the passage Piver.

Pluto is an all-day cafe inside of Lafayette Anticipations in the Marais. What is Lafayette Anticipations? I’ve been there and I still couldn’t tell you. There’s a gallery space (it bills itself as a contemporary art center) but there wasn’t anything showing when we visited. There’s a small but mighty bookstore. And in the very back, a smattering of blo…

Breizh Café is by far my favorite crêperie in Paris. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been during the last two decades. More than fifty? It’s never enough. I say crêperie, but it’s really a small chain of crêperies. There are currently ten in Paris (see the list of locations below), plus another two in the suburbs. I’ve been to half of the newer locations and have never detected a difference in quality.

Eels has been quietly gaining a fan base since opening in 2017. It has appeared, during these last seven years, on quite a few French and American top lists, although the internet’s preference for novelty means that I hear less about Eels lately. That’s a shame because it’s very good. I was curious to know how Eels is holding up since the pandemic and returned this week for a phenomenal dinner. Eels is located in the 10th arrondissement, in that very hipster neighborhood just west of Château d’Eau.

Le Cornichon is a restaurant, a rather new one in the Goncourt neighborhood where Belleville slopes down toward the canal. When I look at it through the lens of a restaurant, however, it doesn’t totally add up. I prefer to think of it as a wonderful diner. Or a very upscale PMU bar, which it sort of is. Or at least was. PMU (which stands for Pari Mutuel Urbain) is the state-controlled betting system in France.

Fabrizio Ferrara has been my favorite Italian chef in Paris for a long time. From 2009-2015 he ran an atmospheric restaurant in an Aligre alleyway called Le Caffè dei Cioppi. It was tiny, hard to book, and delicious. Ferrara traded in that special little shoebox for more space and opened his eponymous osteria in 2016 in a former cabinet maker’s shop. Appropriately, the back wall is paneled with built-in bookcases and there’s a gorgeously curved wooden counter up front.
