ERIE — Area teams converged on Prairie Ridge Golf Course for the Erie Invitational Boys Golf Tournament on Monday. Although it is known for being a straightforward yet frustrating 9-hole course due to high winds across the plains, Prairie Ridge was near calm for the tournament. This allowed for a number of solid scores. Humboldt freshman Connor Newman won his third-straight tournament of the year with a 10-stroke victory.

CHANUTE — A low-scoring affair fell the way of the visitors on Tuesday, as the Chanute Blue Comets suffered a 38-37 loss to the Wamego Red Raiders in the Class 4A East Boys Sub-State semifinals. Wamego entered the matchup with a 5-15 record, though this did not give the Blue Comets any security. Chanute head coach Devon Crabtree said his team actually took practices up a notch in preparation for the postseason bout. “We just couldn’t make plays down the stretch,” Crabtree said of Tuesday’s outcome.

However, the week before Umbarger was to take office, she notified the clerk’s office that she decided against taking the position for personal reasons.

IOLA — Winners of seven straight games and now a piece of hardware, the Cherryvale Chargers girls won the War on 54 title on Friday, beating Iola, 45-31. In typical fashion under head coach Kelsey Overacker, who secured her 100th career victory in the first round of the tournament, Cherryvale connected on seven 3-pointers en route to the win. “Holy moly, we live and die by that,” Overacker said. “You can tell in games we struggle. We’re still learning to find ways to score when we aren’t hot.
