Petworth News is a community-focused news platform dedicated to delivering local updates and stories about the residents and happenings in Petworth and nearby neighborhoods in Washington DC. Founded in early 2015 by Drew Schneider on Facebook, Petworth News aims to provide valuable local information to help connect and engage the community. The website was launched in June 2015 and has been recognized by Washington City Paper readers as a runner-up for Best Community Blog in their Readers' Choice Polls for 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. It has also received attention from Curbed DC and was highlighted by The Washington Post as one of their top DC blogs. In December 2018, Drew was honored with a Community Cornerstone Award from DC Councilmember Anita Bonds for his commitment to local activism. In 2018, Petworth News was a semi-finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in Local Journalism for its impactful story about Momma, a pitbull left outside in the cold, which gained national attention and contributed to new animal welfare laws in DC. by Ashley CobbEl Torogoz restaurant on 9th Street, between Varnuma and Upshur, owned by David Ventura, has been sold and is renamed Mary Bar & Grill’s Tex-Mex Restaurant. I stopped in for a chat with owner Mary Orellana and her daughter Roxana Castellon to discuss other changes besides the name. If you loved the food from El Torogoz, you’ll love that many of those items are still on the menu for Mary Bar and Grill’s.

Cinder BBQ may have been barely a year old when COVID-19 began wreaking havoc on a global scale, forcing many restaurants to shut down or take more creative measures to stay afloat. I remember scrolling through Instagram in 2020 and seeing Cinder’s call for community action.

Prince was enthusiastic answering the question of why open a restaurant on Kennedy Street? He leaned back in his seat, a smile beaming on his face. He told me the story of making it as a successful adult despite many obstacles, going away to college, and becoming an entrepreneur. He said as a youth he was faced with the being on the streets with a lot of his peers or being different and going away to college. He went to college.
