U.S. equity markets, as measured by the S&P 500 index, recently reached a new all-time high, after going roughly two years without surpassing its January 2022 peak. With the index now recording a series of highs since the beginning of the year, the question is whether or not there’s still room for equities to rise. History clearly suggests that there is. As shown in the chart above, new “all-time highs” for the S&P 500 are fairly common.

Gross domestic product and income have recently diverged to a degree last seen in 2007. How that divergence is resolved in the coming quarters will be a key determinant in the hard versus soft landing debate.
