There’s always something special about being the host city for an all-day celebration of baseball, and this year, Waconia has earned that honor for the second annual Baseball Day Minnesota. Waconia’s Lions Field was chosen for its state-of-the-art renovations—part of a community investment that began in 2017. The facility already played host to the 2021 Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Tournament, and this spring, it will serve as the backdrop for a premier showcase of prep baseball.

Two of the top teams in Class 4A, Section 5AAAA will go head-to-head during the upcoming Baseball Day Minnesota, as Maple Grove and Mounds View square off in a highly anticipated matchup. Maple Grove is coming off a .500 season, where they dropped six one-run games and were eliminated in the second round of the section tournament—ironically, by Mounds View.

There’s no shortage of talent across the state when it comes to Class 2A baseball in Minnesota. Perham has been a staple of the Minnesota State High School League’s 2A class for decades, while Rockford is riding the momentum of capturing their first-ever state championship last season. “We told them from the beginning that this would be something special, and they bought into it right away,” said Rockford head coach Cody Hallahan about their 2024 season.

It’s rare for teams from opposite corners of the state to meet outside of a state tournament. But Baseball Day Minnesota will do just that, bringing together Montevideo and Duluth Marshall for their first-ever matchup in school history. “From my vantage point, I love it,” said Duluth Marshall head coach Nick Garramone. “I love the challenge, I love playing state tournament-caliber baseball programs. Win or lose, it’s going to make us better. Parents, coaches, players—we want the challenge.
