PropTalk Magazine

PropTalk Magazine

PropTalk, established in the summer of 2005 in Annapolis by enthusiastic boaters of the Chesapeake Bay, is dedicated to the boating community. The company publishes PropTalk Magazine, a monthly print magazine that highlights Chesapeake Bay powerboating and the vibrant lifestyle associated with it. Each edition of PropTalk is available at over 850 strategically selected and closely monitored locations across the mid-Atlantic region. Rather than trying to cover everything, PropTalk focuses on in-depth storytelling, showcasing the individuals, locations, vessels, personalities, and events that contribute to making the Chesapeake Bay one of the top boating destinations in the world.

The premier issue of PropTalk hit newsstands in July 2005, and a very special boat named Sawdust graced that inaugural cover. She is a Thomas Point 43, built by Mast and Mallet in Edgewater, MD. Captain Rick Franke reached out to the builder, Joe Reid, and you can read more about his take on the legacy of Sawdust in the July issue. Now we get to hear from the current owner, Thomas Menighan, whose love affair with big boats, and specifically powerboats, didn’t begin until later in life.

Pop Quiz: If your powerboat has a very thirsty V8, does driving a Prius make up for your carbon footprint? Probably not. And even if it did, though we boaters are among those who care the most about our aquatic environment, we have to fess up to the fact that we use a ridiculous amount of fuel to get from Point A to Point B.

Bertram Yachts grew out of the legendary 1960 Miami-Nassau powerboat race. Moppie, a 30-foot wooden prototype with a deep-vee hull, designed by C. Raymond Hunt for Richard Bertram, won the race and even set a new course record. After the race, a mold was cast from Moppie, leading to the first fiberglass Bertram 31. The next year, Bertram again won the Miami-Nassau race but this time in the fiberglass version of the original prototype.

The Chesapeake Bay is a vast and wonderful waterway, with more than 11,600 miles of shoreline, 4480 square miles of surface area, 50 major tributaries, and hundreds of ports and towns awaiting your visit—but if you cruise these waters on the wrong type of boat, you’ll be in for turbulent rides and rudimentary living conditions. You say you’d hoped to enjoy aquatic expeditions all across Chesapeake Country without roughing it? Then you need a boat like the Ranger Tugs R-31 CB.

Drive about an hour and a half south from Annapolis and you will hit the tip of St. Mary’s County, MD, home to my alma mater, St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Prior to attending college there, I can’t say I spent too much time in Southern Maryland, but now it will always be a little piece of home. Whether visiting by boat or car, there are miles of shoreline, historical sights, and seafood galore to satisfy any Bay lover.
