QT - The Queensland Times
The Queensland Times holds the title of the oldest continuously published provincial newspaper in Queensland. It was established on July 4, 1859, initially as the Ipswich Herald, and has been in operation ever since. Remarkably, it maintained a flawless record of publishing every scheduled issue until a temporary halt due to a printer's strike in 1972, overcoming challenges like fires, floods, and equipment failures. However, it wasn’t the first newspaper to be published in Ipswich; that distinction goes to the North Australian, which started in 1855. This paper featured two influential individuals in the Queensland media landscape: Hugh Parkinson, who worked as the foreman printer, and Arthur Sidney Lyon, who served as the editor. In 1863, the North Australian relocated its publishing office to Brisbane.
