reimaginED

reimaginED

reimaginED is a communications platform focused on policy and public affairs for Step Up For Students, a nonprofit organization in Florida recognized by the state for managing four scholarship programs that benefit K-12 students. Originally launched as redefinED over ten years ago, reimaginED aims to explore and share insights on how expanded educational choices are reshaping K-12 education in Florida and beyond. The reimaginED team looks at the opportunities and challenges of personalizing education for each student, situated in a state known for being a leader in educational choice. Our contributors draw on their expertise to discuss the growing variety of educational options available—such as traditional public schools, charter schools, private and parochial schools, homeschooling, and learning pods—and the different ways families can access these options, including tax credit scholarships, state-funded scholarships, and education savings accounts. This creates a unique opportunity to rethink education.

Barring a Hail Mary this spring, Illinois’s five-year run as a blue-state bastion of educational options will end after the current school year. This is the first defeat of its kind in the modern era of the private school choice movement. Historically, once programs get going, they become hard to dislodge. Democrats took over the Nevada Legislature in 2016 and smothered the Silver State’s first-in-the-nation universal education savings account before it could serve a single student.

Educators can be trained, certified and spend years on the job without ever encountering what science says about how young people learn. Scientists are trying. The 2014 bestseller “Make It Stick: The Science of Successful Learning,” by Peter C. Brown, Henry L. Roediger III and Mark A. McDaniel, made an urgent case for these ideas.

For the past several years, the story of American homeschooling has been a narrative sorely lacking reliable numbers. Last week, The Washington Post filled the void with the first carefully assembled nationwide look at state and local administrative data. It found that in the states where comparable data exist, homeschooling is up 51% during a six-year period that includes the pandemic and years since. That’s a seismic shift in American public education, but it’s still poorly understood.

A provision that made Florida a national literacy leader 20 years ago could be repealed in an effort to ease the regulatory burden on Florida’s school districts. A state Senate panel unveiled a package of proposed deregulation legislation. One proposal would end the requirement that public schools hold back third graders who struggle in reading. House Bill 1, passed earlier this year, created the largest expansion of education choice in the nation’s history.
