Religion and Politics
Religion & Politics is a digital news platform that delves into two subjects often considered taboo in polite conversation. It is an initiative of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion & Politics, located at Washington University in St. Louis. Our platform showcases articles written by academics and journalists who share a core belief: that religion and politics intersect, conflict, and influence our public lives in significant ways. These connections can be found in various settings, including our homes, legal systems, government buildings, educational institutions, research labs, and even on the battlefield. We aim to present a diverse array of viewpoints instead of advocating for a particular political stance. We value open and respectful discussions and enrich these debates by providing a broader perspective through historical insights, critical evaluations, and extensive research, all conveyed through engaging writing.

The story of the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama, is widely told, so much so that Rosa Parks, who inspired it, and Martin Luther King Jr., who led it, are now two of the best-known figures in U.S. history. Less known is how the events of that protest turned King into a bestselling author. On January 23, 1957, more than a year after the boycott had begun, the U.S. Supreme Court ordered an end to segregation on Montgomery’s buses.
