Retire By 40

Retire By 40

I created Retire By 40 to document my path towards early retirement and to share my goal of achieving financial independence. This blog became a platform for me to outline my plan for leaving the corporate world, and it also helped keep me accountable to my readers. I knew I needed a solid strategy and commitment to make it happen. Finally, in July 2012, I handed in my resignation and stepped away from my corporate job for good. Did I really reach FIRE (financial independence retire early) in just two years? Not quite. I had been diligently saving and investing since I began my full-time career in 1996. My wife played a crucial role in this journey as well. She is very budget-conscious and has always supported my goal. When I first mentioned starting the blog, Retire By 40, she was pregnant and wasn't thrilled about the idea. However, once I demonstrated that we could sustain our lifestyle without my engineering job, she quickly came around.

Recently, I got a suggestion from a long-time reader. Here is part of her comment on the controversial FatFIRE Is Boring blog post. You might want to revisit your plans for when Jr goes to college. You could start living your ideal life now. Unless, of course, you have intentionally decided to wait for whatever reason. That’s a great suggestion. You don’t wait until retirement to be happy. You need to enjoy the journey. Ideal life is funny, though. It changes as you go through different stages of life.
