Sampson Independent

Sampson Independent

W.W. Casteel, the Editor and Publisher, launched the inaugural issue of the Sampson Independent on March 13, 1924, showcasing his commitment to both his new publication and the local Sampson County community. Casteel expanded his newspaper through a mix of strategic acquisitions and competitive efforts. He kicked off by buying the subscriber lists from two earlier newspapers: The Sampson Democrat, established in 1894, and the Sampson News Dispatch, which began in 1908. To further boost his readership, he organized a subscription campaign that featured an enticing prize—a brand-new Studebaker Six Special automobile valued at $1,624, awarded to one fortunate subscriber.
