Scannain, which means "movies" in Irish, is the perfect name for a platform dedicated to the Irish film industry. Launched in October 2009, Scannain began as a blog featuring movie reviews, news, and personal opinions about films. Over time, the personal rants have lessened, while the number of contributors has grown from one to many passionate volunteers who love cinema. Today, Scannain stands as the largest independent website focused on film and television in Ireland. Currently, our mission is to showcase international films and television to Irish viewers, while also highlighting Irish film and television to both local and global audiences. Scannain is committed to supporting Irish filmmakers and takes pride in our contributions to the independent screen industry in Ireland.

KNEECAP sweeps at 36th Galway Film Fleadh

The 36th edition of the Galway Film Fleadh came to an end last night after another outstanding year. With sold-out screenings across the festival programme, the Fleadh featured 94 feature films and over 100 short films featuring the best Irish and World cinema. The annual awards ceremony took place on Sunday 14th July before the closing film, To A Land Unknown from director Mahdi Fleifel, which follows Chatila and Reda who are saving to pay for fake passports to get out of Athens.

Lorcan Finnegan’s The Surfer owes a considerable debt to Frank Perry’s 1968 psychological odyssey The Swimmer. Mind you, Burt Lancaster never had to contemplate eating a rat. Such behaviour, however, is absolutely in the wheelhouse of Nicolas Cage. While he is currently enjoying a resurgence thanks to some canny choices of scripts, Cage’s most notable performances of late have been more muted than his brand suggests.
