    Another edition of the Native Pop festival in Rapid City is another chance for artists emerging and established to find an audience. With styles ranging from traditional to contemporary, every show brings something new. The artist reception and award ceremony was held at the Suzie Cappa gallery in downtown Rapid City, and the main show continues through Sunday. James Star Comes Out was named the best in show.

    The Brookings City Council has approved funding to expand child care services in the community. In total, more than a half million additional funds were added to the school district. The $580,000 was initially allocated to the Brookings Economic Development Corporation and will fund new projects at the school district and local Boys and Girls Club. State Sen. and community economic director Tim Reed said this shift in funding will benefit every group involved. “It really is a win-win," Reed said.

    After historic flooding in East River some are beginning to pick up the pieces, and others have lost everything. In some communities, recovery is only just beginning. The flooding across southeast South Dakota is, according to the National Weather Service, the most severe flood event in South Dakota since 2019, resulting in total home losses and one confirmed death. Jason Wescott is the emergency management director for Union County, one of the hardest hit areas.

    The South Dakota secretary of state’s office says a group opposing new pipeline regulations has filed a petition to place the issue on the November ballet. Lawmakers passed a bill this year in response to conflict over a proposed carbon sequestration pipeline. The group opposing the bill cites issues with local control, property rights and safety concerns. They gathered signatures to refer the law, meaning South Dakota voters will have the final say.

    The U.S. Department of Justice has announced an expansion of resources to address antitrust issues in agriculture. The DOJ intends to expand hiring of attorneys for its Chicago office to assist with primarily antitrust, competition and fairness issues within agricultural supply chains, the department announced this week. Doug Sombke is the president of South Dakota Farmers Union. He said the expansion of resources is what the Midwest has been waiting for.
