Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel) having supposedly been eaten by a worm and returned to life sees the light differently.

The essense of epic is an idea not lost on Ridley Scott. In recent years, he has reapproached those opuses that have stood the test of time with varying degrees of success. With "Gladiator II", the heart and approach is in the right place. This is definitely a better outing than "Napoleon." He is anchored by great actors and they are up to the challenge.

Mark Strong plays the Emperor Javicco with a daughter both destined for power, wild and yet bound for the sisterhood. Unlike Irulan who knows in a way what is coming (as the end of "Dune Part II" attests), the reason for her path (and why she chooses it) is not clear yet. A would-be wedding made as a power move brings to mind fuedal contracts which are at the basis of the House structure. The wild card here is Travis Fimmel as Desmond Hart, an Imperial soldier and yet somewhat of a mystery.

The progression of a story of power can move in interesting ways depending on the necessities of the character. With the character of Rhiannon in "Sweetpea," Ella Purnell is playing against the notion of a wallflower who likely honestly believes she is on the side of right. Like DFENS played by Michael Douglas in "Falling Down", this truth is at fault because of the character’s sociopathic tendencies but it highlights a unique perspective of what happens when reality takes a break.

Again, it plays alright but not enough to sustain this kind of budget. Christmas films may turn off die hard action junkies and families might hesitate before going to see the film. It does also have a weird tone, maybe akin to "Hudson Hawk" where it wants to be tongue-in-cheek while still being extremely silly. Hawaii standing in for Aruba is a little much but shooting in Hawaii is now likely a standard part of Johnson's contract.
