But I expanded a little too fast and used orbital space for Temples of Communion when the more pressing need was to boost research to improve my ships’ combat capabilities. Now I’m locked in a series of battles against the TEC, with resources also needed for static defenses.

I needed more oxygen to sustain my growing city and the many defenders that keep it safe from the assaulting horrors. But I hate putting down low-efficiency buildings, so I have to, once again, build a tall platform on which to build the required purifier. I choose stone as the material, mainly because I have a surplus from my efficient and fully staffed quarries. But I get ambitious and decide to create a bigger space to also house the purifiers that I will need in near future.

It really helps that I heal almost every time I dash, although there are moments when my overreliance on this move can be a problem. I am no longer stopping to destroy barrels hoping to get a nice green apple, which is nice. But I sometimes stay too long in one place and get hit, because the enemy horde is big enough that my many powers and even careful parry use cannot stop them all. As I move from the big open area toward narrower streets, I get a new level.

The Italians should really be using more armor, but the quality of their tanks isn’t that great. And that means there’s plenty of infantry fighting in this desert campaign, which requires speed and aggression. To make matters worse, our air force is grounded by a sandstorm. Visibility is also reduced but, thankfully, our objectives are clear.

I really wanted a Liberator before facing this sector boss, but I had to settle for two Steelclad heavy escorts instead. I was facing enemy fleets that were becoming harder to defeat and didn’t want to risk all my progress just to get the best ship in my fleet. A Command station, expensive as it was, and some decent tech choices helped and I managed to take out all enemies without taking any carrier damage.

The four racing dogs aren’t aware of the violence around them, the dead body that led to the track’s closure, and the two detectives who are working hard to find out what happened. They already dealt with a severed hand and a man killed by a water tower as they tried to understand how drugs flowed through the city. Now they have to understand how betting works at the track and decide who has been involved in both theft and murder. The keywords keep coming but the picture isn’t becoming clear.

Portugal decided it didn’t want to give up Goa, its small colony on the Indian subcontinent. India, newly independent under the capable leadership of Gandhi, is fighting the Nazis but isn’t in the actual Allies. This allows the country to keep its options open after the end of World War II. It also means that Portugal has joined the Japanese in an alliance, which is pretty immersion-breaking considering that I’m not playing an alternate version take on India.

The balls are my biggest problem. I have chain lightning activating every few seconds that eliminates or significantly weakens almost any creature I can see. I am constantly belching fire on reload, making it relatively easy to make sure no one can get and hurt my hero. But the rolling ball enemies move quickly and can sometimes get close enough to deal damage. Maybe the shotgun is a better solution for this challenge, and I plan to pick one up as soon as I scrounge up the money.

The big Magus has a nasty trick power that allows him to swap places with one of my heroes and magic blocks to block movement. It breaks the team apart and means my affected character has to waste action points on movement, rather than on an attack or special power use. But my backline abilities are coming online in two turns and I’m confident that my remaining heroes can hold out and take down this boss.
