Springback Magazine is a platform that connects artists, programmers, managers, and audiences with the vibrant world of new and independent dance throughout Europe. Established in 2018, Springback Magazine takes a unique approach. Instead of focusing on mainstream trends, we explore the diverse streams of dance practice, performance, and ideas. We celebrate the radical, grassroots, current, unconventional, and, most importantly, the creative aspects of dance. Together, these elements create a rich tapestry of contemporary European dance. We prioritize quality in our coverage. In a time when online content can often feel overwhelming and scattered, we emphasize hands-on editorial support for our writers, benefiting them, the magazine, and our readers. All our writers participate in our annual Springback Academy, where they develop their skills. Springback is not just a magazine; it is part of a broader network that fosters dialogue and understanding of contemporary dance in Europe, linking artists, programmers, researchers, thinkers, and audiences with innovative dance practices.

A cast of 9 semi-nude dancers arrange themselves amidst an assortment of utilitarian props and structures: two are prostrate on the stage floor, another lies across a pile of bulky black speakers, while another hangs from a metal scaffold-like structure draped with green netting. From these positions, they begin to slowly writhe, morphing between positions that are at times contorted, vulnerable and sickly, at others sensual, strong and seductive.

But there is a deeper, lasting horror behind Sharpe’s choices. Goner mournfully and violently confronts the sinister themes within marginalisation. At one point, Sharpe confronts the audience, speaking directly to them from ‘in here’ – a reference to the cage-like structure, but to emotional imprisonment too. Goner positions the audience as the perpetrator, and the genre of horror, with its associated violence, only enhances this disparity of power.

Festival Dansa València annually presents the creative bubbling of a mostly Spanish dance scene. During the festival’s 36th edition, more than 30 dance events take over the city’s venues, running from the city theatre into independent performance spaces to parks and the beach. I had the pleasure to visit the festival during a long April weekend, just before the closure.

The day I arrived in Prague for Czech Dance Platform (CDP), I visited the city’s new visual art space Kunsthalle Praha. There, as part of an exhibition exploring the concept of Bohemia as a cultural movement, I saw a black-and-white photograph by Babette Mangolte of Trisha Brown’s Roof Piece (1973), in which dancers spread across New York rooftops signal to each other using their bodies. Somehow, this image imprinted on my brain.

Apoptosis, the science of programmed cell death, drives a frightening piece for five dancers: Starving Dingoes, a collaboration between Léa Tirabasso and cancer specialists Simone Niclous and Alexsandra Gentry-Maharaj. Dressed in gym clothes, the dancers line up flat on their stomachs on a stage covered with sand-like fragments of orange rubber. Shuffling face down, they advance in regular shunts, chanting operatically.
